Cubely: a new 3D printer?
From: MAKE Magazine

cubely.jpg

Cube.ly appears to be a 3D printer that uses 80/20 girders for the 2'x2'x2' chassis, with all electronic components identical to those used in the Makerbot and Mendel. The project's charter describes the project's goals: Provide a fully capable 3D printer which can be used to directly manufacture or can be used to easily create the precursors to large volume traditional manufacturing including vacuum forming, injection molding, casting and others. The core device must be buildable using standardized, commodity components that are widely available and under $1,000 USD. The core device must not require any other device as a prerequisite to build it (other than identi...

MakerBot achieves self-replication, prints MakerBot offspring

3d_printed_makerbot.jpg

Want a MakerBot? Now you can just print one! Christian Arnø (Thingiverse member Webca) designed this 3D printed full size MakerBot, constructing the chassis out of glued-together sections of printed plastic instead of laser-cut wood. I can't imagine this is the most efficient way to build a MakerBot, but it does mean that the Cupcake CNC is now capable of replicating itself! The photos of it look beautiful, though I would love to see some video of it printing. Extra points for the white MakerBot logo on the front. The RepRap is not the only 3d printer that can replicate itself, now the Makerbot can to. This Makerbot is made out of approxima...

Dremel attachment for MakerBot

plumb2.jpg

The correct name for the MakerBot 3D printer is the Cupcake CNC, suggesting that all sorts of attachments could be substituted for the usual plastruder -- in this case, Andrew "Clothbot" Plumb created an assembly out of some makerbotted connectors and a length of MakerBeam, allowing the mounting of the business end of a Dremel Flex-Shaft. The result? A mini CNC mill slash drill press. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in 3D printing | Digg this! ...

Open Structures: Help create an open-source building system

openstructures1.jpg

openstructures2.jpg

Open Structures is a set of standards allowing product designers and architects to create hackable items -- for instance, a sink or a bicycle -- which could be recombined into new inventions. The system's starting point is a 4x4cm grid that all components must accommodate. [The] project explores the possibility of a modular construction model where everyone designs for everyone on the basis of one shared geometrical grid. It initiates a kind of collaborative Meccano to which everybody can contribute parts, comp...

Haz MakerBot... now what?

hfmakerbot1c.jpg

hfmakerbot2c.jpg

The Twin Cities' communal workshop, the Hack Factory, bought a MakerBot CupCake 3D printer. Working for about six hours, some of my cohorts assembled the X and Y stages and partially installed the assembly in the body. With any luck we'll be printing this time next week. We're all excited to finally have a 3D printer in the shop. I myself have a backlog of awesome projects that I want to print: • Ball-chain gears... any kind of gear is good! • I have no specific project in mind for this Geneva wheel but it...
