From: MAKE Magazine

Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool: Flickr user mrbbking is learning
electronics by working his way through various electronics books,
which is a great idea. The picture above shows two of his attempts
to build an identical circuit. Both versions work, however he was
unsatisfied with the way his first attempt looked (right side), so
he re-arranged the parts to construct a much neater version (left
side): Two copies of the same circuit. The one on the right was
done first, and is a pretty good rat's nest, if I do say so myself.
The one on the left was built based on the other one, but with an
eye toward clarity. Much eas...

Learning Objects for Electronics, a free electronics tutorials website

MAKE subscriber Matt writs in to share this comprehensive
electronics tutorial site, Learning Objects for Electronics: This
is a site developed by my good friend Pat Hoppe and his colleagues
at Gateway Technical College in Racine, WI. He made these flash
animations to help his students practice the basics of electronics;
Everything from units, resistor color code, logic gates, filters,
op amps, transistors, and even how to use your Ti-86. As a HS
electronics teacher, I am very grateful to Pat for the hours he
spent mentoring me, and I use this site quite regularly with my
students. He's a great man, and this is a great site for our

Circuit building skill: cable lacing

Tired of messy wires getting in the way of an otherwise tidy build?
Then you might want to check out cable lacing, where you use a
single piece of string to tie together the wires. Keith of Keith's
Electronics Blog ran into this issue when putting together an
x0xb0x synthesizer kit, and did an excellent job lacing the x0xb0x
wiring harnesses to make a clean build. More: Lost Knowledge: Cable

Reading a PC fan speed with Arduino

Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool: Flick user Arms22 built this 7
Segment LED FAN Revolution Display to monitor the speed of a PC
case fan. It's a pretty simple project, but a good introduction to
sensing pulse durations and driving multiple seven segment
displays. The write-up is in Japanese, or you can find a machine
translated version here. Read the Full Story » | More on MAKE

SPINmaster, a DIY staggered hard disk spin-up manager

Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool: Bryan Levin was apparently having
problems with cheap computer power supplies that couldn't handle
turning all of his drives on at the same time. Rather than just buy
a beefier power supply, he decided to build this SPINmaster device
to turn them on one at a time. He's got a few more photos of the
project on his Flickr page. Looks great! Read more | Permalink |
