From: MAKE Magazine

Ad agency GGRP recently built this cardboard record player. The
record player is built into the dust jacket for the record, and you
play it by turning record with a pencil. It's a neat idea, but it
turns out that there is some prior art here. There is an earlier
version of the same thing called CardTalk, which was produced by
Global Recordings Network to spread their missionary messages in
the 20th century:

If you want to try making your own, teacher Dan Keith has
instructions for a make-it-yourself versi...

Laser etched phono record

This is a very interesting experiment in creating record grooves by
laser etching acrylic. Niklas Roy and Jari Suominen write: So how
did we do it exactly? - First, we used a vector program to draw the
record. With different line colours we could modulate the laser's
intensity. Because the hole in the middle of the record had to be
burnt through the plexi, while for the grooves, just the surface
had to be burnt. As you can see on the pictures above, we also
experimented with different depths of the groove within one loop
(track 6). Track 2 was something like a random noise experiment
where the needle would jump in a different way over the groove...
Mandala Record Clock

Forgive me for this obvious pun, but records have been getting a
lot of play here on CRAFT. Of all the re-purposed record crafts
I've seen lately, my favorite is this awesome hand painted clock.
It's clever and modern and delicate and cool. For the less skilled
painters, I bet you could make one with a screen printed design
too. Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments

Vinyl + CD on one disc

Musician Jeff Mills' latest release is a hybrid CD + 5" vinyl
record on the same hunk of matter. I'd love to see a video of it in
action or at least a view from the side so that I may begin to
guess what it must be like to use it! Read more | Permalink |

Make and Mend: Thingiverse fixit roundup

You're at home or on the job, and something breaks. Maybe it's the

clicking on sites, or listening to hold music on the phone. But
rather than buy a replacement, maybe it would be cooler just to
print one? Here are some neat ideas from Thingiverse that we think
follow the Make and Mend philosophy. #10
