SXSW 2010 Web Awards are Thingamagoopy
From: MAKE Magazine

thingamagoopSXSW.jpg

It's about time somebody made a media award that actually does something other than serve as a impromptu murder weapon. At this years SXSW festival, the Web Awards were built around Bleep Labs' Thingamagoop 2, the analog synth toy (which now has digital/Arduino-control capability). Bleep Labs In the Maker Shed:

John Park in the Maker Shed: tinyCylon kit build
They let me loose in the Maker Shed, so I grabbed a tinyCylon kit, built it, and embedded it in a busted Nerf gun! Please enjoy the video, and watch out for the noisy lamp. To modify the kit for flexibility, I soldered the LEDs in at full height; you could extend things further by adding some wire between the switch and board, or make an extension for the battery pack. I'd love to hear about other kit modifications people have done. These kits are great for adding effects to props and costumes. For more details on building the kit, check out Marc de Vinck's excellent build notes here.

Voice Shield + joystick = ? suggestions wanted
I just got a Voice Shield kit for Arduino (analog audio shield that allows you to record and play audio sound bytes), along with a 2-axis joystick (fancy analog interface to two potentiometers).

= ? Once I've got the shield put together I'm going to make a basic how-to video on triggering it with the joystick. Any suggestions on what I should demo? Such as, trigger sound bytes at different rates? Try to mix tiny samples one after another at different pitches to create harmonies? Henny Youn...

John Park in the Maker Shed: Karakuri kit build
Gakken makes excellent kits, many of which come from the Maker Shed with English instructions. The Karakuri Somersault Doll kit's directions are Japanese-only however, so I put together this build video to show the key assembly steps. In the Maker Shed:

Employing a centuries old secret artisan technique collected from real Edo-period figures, the kit includes everything you need to create your own acrobatic doll (even the screwdriver!), plus a festive traditional kimono and a stylish tiered pedestal on which to stage performances. Moreover, with you pulling the strings, you can adjust the mechanism to control the...

April Fools' Arduino alarm

aprilPIRSensor.jpg

After we put the kids to bed last night my wife and I realized we needed to set up some April Fools' Day pranks. "Quantity over quality!" my wife said, as we began moving furniture into the wrong rooms, putting food dye tablets inside the faucets, and other cheap tricks guaranteed to get a giggle. I decided we needed at least one higher-tech gag. So I built this motion sensing alarm and tucked it into the shampoo bottle recess in the shower. When the kids entered the bathroom they got an earful of beeping piezo buzzer for their troubles! The basic elements are an Arduino Duemilanove, a PIR sensor, breadboard, ScrewShield, piezo buzzer, LED, ...

John Park in the Maker Shed: PIR Arduino motion alarm
Want to learn how to hook up a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to your Arduino? Check out this video I put together doing just that. These sensors are very nice to work with either by themselves (along with a transistor or relay) or on a microcontroller. You get about a 20 ft. range for detecting motion from humans, animals, other things that emit a decent amount of infrared radiation. WILL NOT DETECT THE UNDEAD. This is the same alarm setup I used to prank my kids on April Fools' Day. In the Maker Shed:

The PIR Sensor detects motion up to 20 feet away by using a Fresnel lens and infrared-sensitive element to d...
